HOT SHOTS 2004 THE BUZZ: Eleicea Brandolini's appearance on the Halloween installment of Fear Factor was certainly a treat -- but winning a cool $50,000 was no trick. See details of her exciting victory in "Have No Fear" below .... As noted in September's newsletter, Kena Zakia was in the thick of the battle for rapper Nelly's hunt for a spokesmodel for his new line of women's apparel, Apple Bottoms. OK, she didn't end up top dog, but her semifinal spot landed her in November's Vibe magazine in a piece about the competition. You can also spot her in ads in Hype Hair and Black Woman magazines this month .... Fall College Girls cover girl Erin Nicole was one of 15 models selected from over 2000 applicants to appear in the 2004 Straps & Wraps calendar. Shooting is scheduled for November 9. If you can't wait till 2004 to catch a glimpse of her, check out her upcoming SE appearances in Wet & Wild (on sale December 16) and Hot Shots (on sale December 23) .... We're happy to report that Sexy Girls Next Door cover girl Erica Campbell is making steady progress in her recovery from a car accident last month in California. "Things are very painful and difficult for me right now," she reports, "but I'm out of the hospital and at home in NH with my family and furry critters. I took a pretty good hit, and it's going to take some time to fully recover, but I have a lot of very wonderful people on my side lending their helping hands, and I hope to be up and running again by early '04. A special thank you to all my fans who have shown their support. " Send your get-well wishes to specialeditions@playboy.com and we'll be happy to forward them to Erica .... Jea Scott's all-girl band is shifting into high gear. The Drive will appear in NYC on November 12 at Don Hills (511 Greenwich St.) to celebrate the release of New York City Rock 'n' Roll, a new CD on which they perform. They're also scheduled to play on November 10 at the Siberia Bar (356 W 40th St) for a free show and on November 15 at the Red Warehouse Party (140 W24th St) .... Finally, from the show must go on files: While last month's Montreal signings with Nov/Dec Lingerie cover girl Bianca Beauchamp and Girls of Canada calendar cover girl Veronique Morin went off without a hitch, the Toronto event was more problematic. Models Erin Connor, Jamie Majer and Sarah Jelly showed up as scheduled at a newsstand in the lobby of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's headquarters. Then nervous network officials suddenly pulled the plug on the proceedings, deeming the event "inappropriate." Undeterred, SE staffers promptly rented a stretch limo, parked it across the street from stodgy CBC and held the signing session inside. Thanks, CBC, for the free publicity -- the ensuing controversy landed the pictures and story on page one of The Toronto Sun. Check out our own photos in the "SE Scrapbook" section below.
SE INSIDER Twenty-seven-year-old cover shoot contest winner Adam Lefevre of Green Bay, Wisconsin arrived in our Chicago HQs early Friday morning, October 10 for a quick tour of the SE production department before heading up to our photo studio for the highlight of the day -- a front-row seat to the Jan/Feb cover shoot and a chance to chat with cover girls Jennifer Walcott, Kimberly Nicole Cameron and Kitana Baker. Later we gave him a light box and a stack of transparencies and let him play photo editor for the afternoon. Dinner with the models and a farewell drink atop the Whisky Sky Bar at the W hotel concluded his memorable trip to Chicago. Before heading back home, Adam told us a little more about himself and his impressions of the day:
What was your reaction to winning the contest? When I got the letter in the mail saying I was a finalist I thought, "No way -- no way I'm going to win this thing." I never won anything in my life before. But I figured at least I'd get an autographed magazine out of it. I was just stunned when I got the call saying I won! It was awesome. Did your girlfriend give you a hard time about hanging out with Playboy models? I don't have a girlfriend, but if I did and she objected to me coming to the shoot, I would have said "Too bad -- bye bye!" I've been a fan of SEs since '97, and there was no way I wasn't going to claim my prize! What was the highlight of your visit? Well, the shoot itself, of course. It's so much better in person. As beautiful as the pictures in the magazines are, the models look a thousand times better in real life. And they were great to me -- really friendly. I was even dancing a little bit with all of them on the set -- showing off my horrible moves! Seeing the SE production room was great, too. I always wondered how you guys put the issues together, so seeing two full walls of layouts in progress was incredible. Any nervous moments? During the shoot they had a lunch catered from an Italian restaurant, and I was invited to eat with the models and crew. All I could think of was I sure didn't want to make a mess of myself in front of them -- like, who is that geek with tomato sauce all over his face?
When Fear Factor came to Boston searching for new contestants I went to the open casting with a few friends and interviewed. Then I had to send in a tape explaining why they should choose me. I came up with this video of me stuffed with pillows -- looking really fat -- running on a treadmill and eating Twinkies, saying I was training for the show. I think the casting crew got a kick out of that, but I was still surprised that they chose me. I didn't even know for sure if I could bring myself to actually compete on the show -- I'm petrified of bugs in general, so the thought of eating them was enough to make me wonder whether I should even be considering this at all. Well, I got up the nerve to do it, but I almost died when it turned out I had to eat a plateful of stink beetles! It was bad enough for me to touch them, let alone eat 24 of them. The smell was indescribable and the taste was disgusting -- but I did it! Anyone who goes on Fear Factor and says it's not about the money is lying, because no one in her right mind would want to do the stunts or eat bugs if it weren't for $50,000! But I definitely would do it again because I learned a lot about my strengths and I proved to myself that with the right amount of determination, anything is possible.
