An Ode to Marisa Tomei

By Shane Michael Singh

More so than equal pay or well-written roles, it seems the battle of many young actresses today is maintaining their likability. One only needs to consider the blowback against Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence to know the 24/7 industry of celebrity gossip has seemingly turned an actress’ career into a ticking time bomb, the flame to the fuse being whenever her social currency diminishes due to overexposure, no matter her ability to chew on celluloid like Bette Davis. Thus has become the plight of America’s sweetheart; even People magazine can’t resist christening a new “Most Beautiful” every year. It seems our infatuation rarely lasts a lifetime—that is, unless you’re Marisa Tomei, who, at the age of 52, is about to become the stuff of dreams for young nerds across the country in her new role, Aunt May, in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
