There’s something to be said about being asked to swap out a high-powered, luxury convertible in Southern California to test an SUV and not feel like you’ve completely blown two hours of great road time.
In concept, the thought of giving up any convertible – especially a hot loaner like the 626-horsepower Bentley Continental GTC Speed – to wheel a sport utility vehicle on the Pacific Coast Highway is an instant buzz kill. But in the case of the 2017 Bentley Bentayga, Playboy learned that you really don’t sacrifice much when sliding out of the GTC into the new SUV.
Well, aside from the Continental’s retractable soft top, which the Bentayga does a decent job of compensating for with a panoramic roof. In a lot of ways, the new Bentley SUV builds on the appeal of the brand in a more “practical” package for those lucky enough to consider $230K practical. The most obvious example of that is the fact that the Bentayga can comfortably seat four to five people unlike the GTC Speed that is more suitable for two.
Then there’s that insane, beast-like power shared by the SUV and the GTC Speed, which one could argue might be better suited for an SUV that typical is used to haul more cargo than a luxury convertible.
Touted as the fastest luxury SUV in the world, the Bentayga features a new version of Bentley’s twin-turbo W12 engine with 600 horsepower and a few other impressive performance feats makes the SUV surprisingly fun to drive as a family hauler. The Bentayga also packs more towing capacity that some Ford F-150s with true off-road capabilities as well, says Bentley.
The SUV’s exterior design, on the other hand, is more a matter of personal taste. There’ll likely be some who absolutely hate the look of the Bentayga and others who immediately gravitate to the design. Either way, it’s clear that it’s the interior that really sells you on the idea of the Bentley SUV, as you can see in the full gallery below.
