When I was a little girl, my mother gave me an impeccable piece of advice: Find someone to look at you the way that Tormund Giantsbane looks at Brienne of Tarth. I’ll admit I was confused at the time, but I get it now. That look is on full display in the first official images previewing Game of Thrones’ seventh season.
Knowing full well that the internet, in its entirety, will pore over these images like it was the casting list for Westworld Season 2, HBO hasn’t given us a ton of new surprises.
Dany is wearing wool and dragon jewelry, Varys has a fur-lined tunic and our beloved ice princess Lady Mormont looks fearsome with some sort of small furry creature as a scarf. In short, Westeros looks cold as heck. To be fair, they’ve been warning us that “Winter is coming” since the show’s pilot episode.
Other surprises: It seems like The Hound has found his purpose, as actor Rory McCann seems bundled and riding with troops. (Last we saw him, he was going north to join the fight against evil.) Arya also seems to have arrived back in Westeros and is bundled in the chill. Is she heading north to meet the last surviving members of her family? (Great effort on behalf of HBO for blurring the faces behind her so we can’t tell if she’s in a great hall or a minor tavern.) And, of course, Brienne and Tormund are squaring off, him looking as lustful as ever. A look to launch a thousand memes, we say.
Game Of Thrones returns to HBO on July 16.
