It’s been decades since we started turning chefs into celebrities—Wolfgang Puck was as famous as the Hollywood stars he was serving at Spago back in the early ‘80s—but the phenomenon has exploded in recent years, and for that we have to thank the Food Network, the flourishing foodie blogging community, and Padma Lakshmi. Celebrity chefs are like rock stars, and no city in the world has more megachef restaurants than New York City. Not all of them, thankfully, are tourist traps like Guy Fieri’s Times Square eatery, Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar, which inspired a searing viral sensation of a New York Times restaurant review. In fact, many of the restaurants from Manhattan’s celebrity cooks are among the finest restaurants in the world. So we decided to pit them against each other and rank our top 10, but first we start with a best of the rest.
