In a remote prairie with rolling hills and ravines, Topo House by Johnsen Schmaling Architects has complete panoramic views of the surrounding Wisconsin grasslands. The 3,300 square-foot home boasts courtyards – one covered, the other two open to the sky – which function as sheltered outdoor rooms that provide protection against the area’s strong and ever-changing winds. On the inside, rooms are interconnected to create a continuous spatial meander that traces the site’s topography. Oh, and the glass rooftop observatory totally makes the house.
