In November 1962, I moved from Los Angeles to Chicago to work at the very popular Playboy Club there. There was always a line down the street of people waiting to get in, even in the winter. I was fitted in a Bunny uniform and shared a dressing room with the other Bunnies. The Club had five floors, and each floor had a different show, dance floor and bar. I worked on the entrance level, sometimes as a greeter and sometimes as a cocktail waitress, and learned to serve drinks by doing the "Bunny Dip," a kind of sideswing while placing drinks on the table. It not only looked more graceful but also kept a Bunny's upper parts in her uniform.
I worked the night shift, so it was dark when I went to work and daylight when I walked home. "Home" at that time was the Playboy Mansion in Chicago. The Chicago Mansion was incredible; I felt like a star living there. I lived in the Red Room for a while until I got an apartment; it was one of the many guest rooms. Shel Silverstein was staying in the Blue Room with his girlfriend. They were very nice to me, and Shel even carried me to a cab once when my foot was in a cast. I hadn't been working at the Club long (about three weeks) when I broke my ankle on a skiing trip to Michigan with a group of friends from the Club. Hef said that while I healed I could work in the gift shop, which was between floors at the Club. That was even more fun because the entertainers passing between floors and shows always stopped by and were indeed entertaining. Lots of them, and customers also, signed my cast, and I regret that I didn't keep it. I remember dancing with Hef one evening at the Club when I had my walking cast on. He was very sweet.
During the day I would mostly sleep, then go for a swim in the exotic indoor pool, tan in the sun room, go shopping or get my hair done. On call, a servant would bring whatever I wanted to eat. Hef frequently had parties and I attended several, along with entertainers such as Sammy Davis Jr. and writers and actors of that era. He would invite his house servants as guests and have the affair catered. Lots of other Bunnies would be there as well.
