I was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, with my two sisters and
our Danish immigrant parents. Every year we spent the summer on Vancouver Island
in a remote little fishing community where my father ran a fishing company. We
had many adventures by the rugged West Coast sea, and it was a wonderful way for
us children to grow up. We would often get in our little rowboat and look for
various sea creatures under the waves. I graduated from West Vancouver High
School and landed a job at a local radio station as a junior accountant. I had no
idea what I was doing, believe me. Numbers were not my thing. But I could type 65
words per minute and was the first choice in my school by the recruiter from the
radio station. So...I winged it! Eventually I caught on and was responsible for a
lot of important duties -- considering my age of only 17 years old. It was fun
working there, and occasionally I even did some voiceover work. One day, one of
the DJs there told me about a local bikini contest that our radio station was
sponsoring. The winner would receive a trip to Paris and a part in a movie, to be
directed by local director Daryl Duke. At first I said no. But the more they
tried to talk me into it, the more I thought about it. It was the "Summer
Madness" bikini contest, and the promotion for it was huge. I entered. The night
before the contest, I had a dream about the number 13 written on a black circle
with a gold star around it. I didn't understand it until I was in line with all
the other girls and the promoter handed me my number -- 13! At that point, I
knew I was going to win. Sure enough, I did, and as it turned out, one of the
judges was a scout for Playboy named Ken Honey. (Ken also discovered several
other Canadian Playmates, including Dorothy Stratten and Kelly
Tough.) ![]() With the DJ at CFUN radio in Vancouver, where I worked as the |
