My mom was all for me being in Playboy, but my dad
wasn't happy about it at all. We were the only Quists in Austin, so he had a lot of his co-workers
constantly asking him about me, which was not good. Today, though, we are very close. My friends
loved it -- I had a lot of money to spend on everyone. One funny story that I can recall was being on
a promotion at a New Orleans car show when this man asked me if I would sign his leg, and I said yes.
So he took the leg off -- it was a prosthetic! I freaked out as he set it on the table with a boot
still on it.
The Mansion is a fairy tale. I stayed there for about four months, first in an upstairs bedroom and
then in the guest house that Barbi Benton had decorated. All of us Playmates shared everything --
from clothes to makeup to ideas. We'd cruise to the Century City Mall in limos to shop. I will never
forget it! They made me feel like a queen. I knew I was always welcome there, no matter what.
It was always so much fun to lie out by the pool with all the girls. My friends then included
Playmates Gail Stanton, Dorothy Stratten, Marcy Hanson and Monique St. Pierre, just to name a few. We
would eat tuna sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies and rub baby oil on one another. Sondra Theodore
was one of my favorites; she taught us the ropes of life at the Mansion.
The parties were phenomenal, especially Midsummer Night's Dream and the pajama parties. All the
biggest actors were there -- the guest list always included stars such as Dustin Hoffman, Clint
Eastwood and Warren Beatty. And then there were Johnny Carson, Bill Cosby, Rod Stewart and so many
football players. I was so star-struck. One of my favorite times was when I was having lunch and
tennis stars Jimmy Connors and Ilie Natase came in. Jimmy shared my tuna sandwich with me as Ilie
gave out fake engagement rings to the Playmates. Willie Nelson, a friend of mine from Austin, came
and played one night for all of us. He just sat around and strummed his old guitar, while we all sang
our hearts out with James Caan. Tony Curtis would drop by to play Truth or Dare. He had some great
stories about Marilyn Monroe.
I would pose again, but now that I have five children I would be concerned about how they would feel.
But if I looked 20 again, well, I just might think about it. I know a lot of people in Austin, and
when I go home many people still recognize me, but in San Diego nobody knows me as a Playmate.
Sometimes people will tell me that I look familiar, but they just can't place me. Maybe if I took my
clothes off? Ha!
