Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles. Her mother, Gladys Pearl Monroe Baker, was a negative cutter for Hollywood studios. The identity of her father has never been fully established; the name on her birth certificate was that of her mother's ex-husband, Edward Mortenson, but several biographies report that the birth was the result of a liaison between Gladys Baker Mortenson and a handsome lover, Charles Stanley Gifford -- himself a distant relative of both George Bush and Dan Quayle.
