About Iggy Azalea
Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly June 7, 1990 in Sydney, Australia, rapper and hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea grew up in Mullumbimby, a small town in the Australian state of New South Wales. An American road trip with her grandparents in 2001, along with an increasing interest in rap and hip-hop, inspired her to move to the United States at age 16.
Iggy moved to Miami, then Houston and Atlanta, where she absorbed Southern rap and a bit of a drawl. She next headed to Los Angeles and released the mixtape “Ignorant Art” in 2011. A video for her song “Pu$$y” went viral, becoming a YouTube favorite.
The following year she signed with Wilhelmina Models International, pursuing a modeling career, and quickly became the “New Face of Levi’s Jeans.” Her music career was also taking off. In 2012 XXL magazine put Iggy on the cover of its annual Top Ten Freshman issue alongside Danny Brown, Roscoe Dash, and French Montana. Iggy became the first female non-American to make the list and caught the attention of the rap world, including Diplo, who helped her with her next mixtape, “TrapGold.”
After some label conflicts, Iggy released her official debut album, “The New Classic,” in 2014. The album featured hit singles “Black Widow,” “Work,” and “Fancy.” She was also featured on “Problem,” a collaboration with Ariana Grande. When “Fancy” hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, “Problem” hit No. 2, making Iggy the only artist outside of the Beatles to hold both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots with her first two hits. The success gained Iggy much attention.
“If a group of white teenage boys conspired to construct their dream white female rapper they might come up with Iggy Azalea, a sexy rapper with long blond hair, a model’s enticing looks, and the detached, hyper-confident air of a dominatrix,” The New York Times wrote. “She has an aggressive vocal approach and a silky flow.”
One person who is not impressed with her silky flow? Azealia Banks. She is not a fan and isn’t afraid to let everyone know about it.
Iggy has continued modeling, working with Levi’s and Forever 21, and has released a line of shoes with Steve Madden. She’s also branched into acting and appeared in the latest Fast and Furious movie, Furious 7.
Iggy dates Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Nick Young, and the pair was featured in a 2014 GQ spread. She previously dated rapper ASAP Rocky.
