About Kate Beckinsale
Actress Kate Beckinsale was born July 26, 1973 in London, the only child of actor and comedian Richard Beckinsale and actress Judy Loe. When she was just five years old, Kate’s father died of a heart attack in his sleep. “It stayed with me, the incredible shock and huge loss,” she told People. “I started expecting bad things to happen, that friends will leave, that loved ones will die. It kept building until I had a nervous breakdown when I was a teenager.”
Kate began acting when she was attending Oxford University, and landed her first big-screen role in Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. She dropped out of Oxford to pursue her acting career, and quickly landed roles in Uncovered, Haunted, and a TV movie of Jane Austen’s Emma. She then heated up Hollywood starring with Chloe Sevigny in The Last Days of Disco in 1998 and with Claire Danes in 1999’s Brokedown Palace.
In 2001, Kate was cast in her biggest film role yet, starring opposite Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett in Pearl Harbor. She played nurse Evelyn Johnson, a role she had to practice giving shots for. “All these boys would come in and drop their trousers, and I would stab and inject them,” Kate told Playboy. “It was an odd day.” The film was a box-office hit, and more blockbusters followed, including Serendipity, The Golden Bowl, and Laurel Canyon.
In 2003, Kate starred in the vampire action hit Underworld. She established herself as a sci-fi/action star, and reprised the role in three more Underworld movies. But Kate was not limited to action. She played Ava Gardner in the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, and did comedy opposite Adam Sandler in Click. Kate’s film work continues to be prolific, with movies including Contraband, Total Recall, and Stonehearst Asylum.
In addition to acting, Kate has done some modeling, with ad campaigns for Coke and Absolut Vodka, and she does charity work for the British Heart Foundation.
Kate married director Len Wiseman in 2003. She has a daughter (Lily Sheen, born in 1999) with ex-boyfriend actor Michael Sheen.
