About Katy Perry
Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California, Katy Perry started her music career as a teenage gospel singer but exploded as a pop sensation in her early 20s.
Growing up in a conservative family, Katy started singing lessons at 9 and learned to play guitar at 13. By 16 she was headed to Nashville with her mother to record a gospel album, and she released the album “Katy Hudson” in 2001. “It reached literally maybe 100 people,” Katy told EW, “and then the label went bankrupt.”
Katy moved to Los Angeles to continue to pursue her music career, and after several record deals fell apart she signed with Capitol in 2007. Later that year she released her first single, “Ur So Gay,” but it was her second single, “I Kissed a Girl,” that rocketed Katy to stardom. Her debut pop album “One of the Boys” hit the Top 10 on the Billboard charts, and Katy earned a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Katy’s musical success has continued with the albums MTV Unplugged (2009), Teenage Dream (2010), and Prism (2013). She’s won five American Music Awards and six Billboard awards and has been nominated for 13 Grammys. She also holds the Guinness World Record for being the musician with the most Twitter followers.
In addition to her musical talents, Katy’s continued success can be attributed to her stage presence and unique style, from her spinning peppermint-swirl dress to giant on-stage cake props. She described her style to Esquire as “Lucille Ball meets Bob Mackie. It’s about innuendo. I want everybody to get the joke, but I want them to think about it for a minute.”
Katy topped Maxim’s Hot 100 list in 2010 and was named Men’s Health’s Hottest Woman of the Year in 2013.
Katy has dated Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy and fellow songwriter John Mayer. She married actor Russell Brand in India in a traditional Hindu ceremony in 2010, but the couple filed for divorce 16 months later.
"A lot of times I’ve ended up with people who have been intimidated by me, unfortunately. They say they’re not, but it comes out in the long run. They’re threatened, or there’s resentment because they don’t know how to handle it,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I’m looking for someone who’s inspired and could be inspiring with me.”
