Legendary pop superstar Madonna was born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan. She was one of six kids in her strict Catholic family and faced tragedy at an early age when her mother died of breast cancer when Madonna was just five. An interesting mix of rebellion and determination, Madonna, a straight-A student, earned a full scholarship to study dance at the University of Michigan. She later dropped out to pursue a dance career in New York.
While in New York, Madonna started dating musician Dan Gilroy. She joined his band, Breakfast Club, and sang in several other bands before going solo and signing with Sire records. She released her first single, “Everybody,” in 1982, followed by "Burning Up,” in 1983. Both were big dance hits. She followed with her debut self-titled album “Madonna,” with hits “Borderline,” “Holiday,” and “Lucky Star.” In 1985 Madonna posed nude for Playboy - this was the cover.
Her next album, 1995’s “Like a Virgin,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Chart, went platinum within a month, and spun hits “Material Girl” and “Angel” as well as the title track, one of Madonna’s biggest hits of all time.
This success was just the tip of the iceberg for Madonna, who went on to produce 11 more albums and 38 top-10 singles. She has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, holds the Guinness World Record as the best-selling female recording artist, and has been named Billboard’s most successful solo artist in the history of American singles charts.
Madonna’s music success has been bolstered by her image and her ability to push the envelope. Her “Like a Virgin” performance at the 1985 MTV music awards, her Truth or Dare documentary, and “Sex,” her soft-core pornographic coffee-table book, have kept her in the spotlight.
She has also appeared on the big screen in films including Desperately Seeking Susan, Who’s That Girl?, Dick Tracy, and A League of Their Own. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for Evita in 1996.
Madonna’s business ventures don’t end there. She has released her own clothing line, written children’s books, produced documentaries, and founded her own entertainment company, Maverick, including Maverick Records.
Madonna has four children—daughter Lourdes with boyfriend Carlos Leon, son Rocco with husband Guy Ritchie, as well as son David and daughter Mercy, whom Madonna adopted from Malawi. In addition to Ritchie, she was also married to Sean Penn and has dated Dan Gilroy, Steve Bray, John “Jellybean” Benitez, Warren Beatty, Jesus Luz, and Brahim Zaibat.
