Rock the Rabbit: Essential 7

In addition to being "lucky," the number 7 has held a place of significance since ancient times. Of course, Jack Daniel's has been predisposed to the number 7 since Mr. Jack first referred to his whiskey as Old No. 7. In celebration of this magical digit, we are pleased to present the Essential 7:

  • "Acceptable in the 80s"
    Calvin Harris
The U.K. pop sensation missed half of the Day-Glo decade -- he was born in 1984 -- but that doesn't matter on this irresistible tribute to the years of synth-laden excess.
  • "Setting Sun"
    The Aliens
The Beta Band never truly made it big, but maybe that will change with its reincarnation as the Aliens, who explore retro 1960s guitar rock (replete with rinky-dink organ) on this single.
  • "Troubled Son"
Working for a Nuclear Free City
This Manchester band owes a large debt to their rock-meets-dance predecessors, but its propulsive bad-dream trip "Troubled Son" carves out a niche it can call its own.
  • "Time on My Hands"
    5 O'Clock Heroes
This New York outfit took more than its name from the Jam, as "Time on My Hands" sounds straight out of the late 1970s/early 1980s post-punk scene.
  • "Dirty Mind"
    The Pipettes
This charming band, finally debuting on these shores, draws from numerous 1960s girl group sources but delivers its wonderful fluff with a decidedly English accent.
  • "Valentine"
    Richard Hawley
The hyper-romantic crooner hails from Sheffield, England but his heart's in 1940s and 1950 American pop, from Frank Sinatra to Sun Records.
  • "Grip Like a Vice"
    The Go! Team
These exuberant, sample-happy Brit rockers know just what it takes to make you boogie, and this over-the-top, old-school, hip-hop homage takes it one notch higher.
