Margot & the Nuclear So & So's began when two music geeks met in an Indianapolis pet store and began discussing the Cardigans and Paul Simon. The band, who for a time all lived together in a communal house, makes a rich, multi-instrumental chamber-folk, complete with cello, trumpet and electric piano -- think Arcade Fire, Okkervil River, or Bright Eyes. Among their influences, they say, are children's books, thrift stores, France Gall, Fleetwood Mac and My Bloody Valentine. They are finishing work on their second album, the followup to their wildly well received The Dust of Retreat. The new record is tentatively titled Animal. What's the best show you ever played?
We played a Halloween show in Ohio where we dressed as a nativity scene. Oh, and we got
to dress up as aliens and Santa and dance on stage at a Flaming Lips show at Red Rocks, in Colorado.
That was a great way to meet a band we already loved.
What was the lowest point in your touring careers?
Whenever the van breaks down on strange places in the middle of the night. In the cold.
I hate the cold. We have been stuck for three or four days in the following cities: Barstow, California;
Hoboken, New Jersey; Des Moines, Iowa.
What first caused you to think being in a band was a great job?
When I lost my virginity.
Anything quirky on your rider when you play gigs?
Black olives and socks, but we rarely get either.
What are the pros and cons of all the technological changes in music of late?
The upside: You can get any piece of music whenever you want. The downside: None.
Do you think the album format is dead?
The album format is not dead. It's just more convenient to carry a ton of albums around.
If I really like a band, I want as much material from them as
possible; not just singles. I think most people are the same way. Albums may be more of a personal
experience. We listen to albums by ourselves, and then turn into ipod DJs at our get-togethers.
And how do you gauge success in this new world?
Someone told me about the MySpace "trifecta" the other day. This is when you log into
MySpace and you have 1) new comments 2) new messages 3) new friend requests. I'm pretty sure that is
not the same rush as hearing your song on the radio, but, hey, we take it where we can get it.
What's the best bedroom album?
Air's Moon Safari.
