Playboy’s Miss August 2014 was Maggie May, a small-town girl from Wamego, Kansas who was raised in Wichita. May didn’t come to Playboy fresh off the farm. She was already an established international model.
The August Playmate has lived across the globe in several different places including New York, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Miami and Los Angeles. She has modeled for big-name brands such as Calvin Klein, Neiman Marcus and Planet Blue. And she was a finalist in the 2004 Sports Illustrated swimsuit competition and a star of the 2012 Sirens fashion summer campaign.
Growing up in a place with not much to do, May was the definition of a tomboy. The 5-foot-11 brunette played basketball and ran track when she was in school. When she wasn’t shooting hoops and running around, she was exploring the world of modeling, doing print and catalog shoots on the side. Her mom did not want her to do it full-time, but that would soon change. After she entered a swimsuit competition and was a top finalist, Maggie struck out on her own. She soon attracted a lot of offers and she moved away from her small town in Kansas to the big city.
Maggie is represented by some of the biggest modeling agencies in the country, including Wilhelmina Models in Miami and Elite Model Management. She got an offer from Playboy and hesitated to accept. “My agency was like, ‘do you want to do Playboy,’ and I said I had to think about it. Then I saw the Kate Moss issue, and I thought, if she can do it, so can I!” she told Playboy.
Photographer Josh Ryan shot her pictorial on location seaside, which was perfect for Maggie who is an avid lover of all things beach and sun. “My pictorial was a ‘Hamptons’ theme,” she told Playboy. “We set up at a nice beach house in Malibu. I know it looks like the ocean, but we actually shot the boat scenes in a lake!” She says that her clients always call her a “trooper,” and she attributes that to how she was raised back at home — determined to finish anything she starts.
