About Maria Checa

Maria Checa is Playboy’s Playmate of the Month for August 1994. She made her Playboy debut in the 40th Anniversary issue where she was featured in “The Great 40th Anniversary Playmate Search.” Later that year Maria received the title of Miss August 1994.

Maria went on to represent the Playboy Playmates in the Super Bowl XXX pre-show, Real Men Don’t Watch Pre-Game, a sports competition pitting the Playmates against models. In 1997 Maria graced the cover of the October issue of Playboy Mexico. She also made her acting debut as Lupe in the horror film From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money.

Maria’s Playboy career continued with appearances in the Playboy videos Lusty Latin Ladies, Wet & Wild VIII: Bottoms Up, Hot Latin Ladies, and Sexy Lingerie VI: Dreams & Desire. Paired with Miss June 1995, Rhonda Adams, the two appeared together in a joint photo shoot exclusive to Playboy Cyber Club members.

Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, Maria is Playboy’s first Colombian Playmate. At a young age her family immigrated to Florida where Maria found her way into the prestigious New World School of Arts in Miami, a high school for those gifted in visual and performing arts. Maria’s introduction to art came from her father. Maria told Playboy, “He never gave me coloring books, though, because just filling in the blanks requires no creativity. I always knew I had talent, and I wanted to prove it.”

Maria is exceptionally skilled at painting, sketching and sculpting, but her passion is photography. She enjoys shooting in black-and-white film and developing her own photos. Her subjects include portraits of friends and architecture. Maria briefly attended the Maryland Institute College of Art but returned to Miami for financial reasons.

Before being discovered by Playboy Maria worked as a makeup artist on photo shoots and at the cosmetic counter in a department store. She has since returned to the world of makeup as a creative consultant for Motives cosmetics brand. Said Maria, “I love color and art and to me, makeup is an art medium. I get to help create colors, moods and storylines to create a beautiful look.”

As creative advisor Maria has been able to combine her love for photography and makeup by creating campaign concepts and directing their promotional videos and photo shoots.
