About Miley Cyrus
The spotlight has always loved Miley Cyrus. And she’s always loved the spotlight. Born to country-music-star dad Billy Ray Cyrus, she went from Disney Channel actress to line-crossing pop-music performer at breakneck speed.
Miley was born Destiny Hope Cyrus near Nashville, Tennessee and has Dolly Parton as her godmother. A happy baby, she was given the nickname “Smiley,” which she later shortened to Miley and adopted as her first name in 2008. She is the oldest of three siblings and also has two half-brothers and a half-sister.
Hannah Montana, her record-setting Disney Channel show, first premiered in 2006. For years, “Hannah Montana” and “Miley Cyrus” were synonyms—names on the lips of kids everywhere. She permeated the adult pop culture scene starting in the late 2000s with her starring role in the movie The Last Song and her song “Party in the U.S.A.,” which reached top-10 charts in eight countries. Her 2013 studio album Bangerz debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
Miley and “twerking” became synonymous after her rump-shaking, foam-finger-wearing performance with Robin Thicke at the 2013 Video Music Awards. “Twerking” entered the common vernacular then and has spawned a whole genre of dancing (and dancing videos) since.
Cyrus has been nominated for and won Teen Choice awards, Kids’ Choice awards, a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award, among others, for her work as a singer and musician.
“Most of my fans are young. They pay for their own tickets and work really hard to be able to come, and so I want to give all of them the best show—the same show in Mississippi as I do in L.A.,” Cyrus told Elle magazine in 2014. “And being on tour is totally like a drug. You’re really high off the energy and then you just crash. You go from 20,000 people screaming like, “I love you, I love you!” and then you’re just in your hotel room by yourself, quiet.”
She’s been romantically linked to Liam Hemsworth (co-star in The Last Song, who she was engaged to for a time and called her “first serious boyfriend”), Nick Jonas, and Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Among many other charities, Cyrus supports the fight against AIDS, creating a cosmetic line that benefits HIV patients, and My Friend’s Place, which offers resources to homeless and runaway youth in the Los Angeles area.
