About Nicki Minaj
Hip-hop superstar Nicki Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. Early life for Nicki was tumultuous. She lived with her grandmother in Saint James before moving to Queens with her mother when she was 5. Her father drank and did drugs and could turn violent when he did. He even set fire to the house in an attempt to kill her mother once (her mom escaped the blaze). Those experiences shaped Nicki’s mindset.
“I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind,” Nicki told Details magazine, “because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, ‘If I’m successful, I can change her life.’”
Nicki wrote her first rap song at age 12, and she studied acting at the La Guardia High School of Music and Art. After high school Nicki dove into pursuing her rap career while supporting herself by working at Red Lobster, a job she was later fired from. Big Fendi, CEO of Brooklyn label Dirty Money Entertainment, discovered Nicki’s work on MySpace and signed her to his label.
Nicki released a series of mix tapes under the Dirty Money label and was discovered by Lil’ Wayne. She signed with his Young Money Entertainment label in 2009 and was featured on a number of artist singles, including Mariah Carey’s “Up Out My Face” and Robin Thicke’s "Shakin’ It 4 Daddy.”
In 2010 her much anticipated debut album, “Pink Friday,” was released with singles “Your Love,” “Right Thru Me,” and “Super Bass.” Nicki became the first female solo artist to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. Her second album, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” came in 2012 with singles “Starships” and “Right by My Side.” Two years later she released “The Pinkprint” with singles "Pills n Potions” and “Anaconda.”
Nicki is known not only for her flowing rap and punch lines but for an ability to change styles and blend different influences. “Why would you choose just one Nicki Minaj?” Jody Rosen wrote in Rolling Stone. “With her, the point is plenitude: more boasts, more hooks, more craziness, more shape-shifting, more cognitive dissonance, more pleasure.“
Nicki is also known for her crazy wigs, outfits, and provocative behavior, including signing fans’ breasts. “If anything, boys are telling me to sign their girls’ boobs,” she told Details. “I’ve gone through 15 markers in a single night—because the girls are usually sweating, and a marker will stop writing if the girls are wet.”
