28. Miami

Coach:
Randy Shannon enters his first season after replacing Larry Coker.

Last year:
7-6, which wasn't good enough to save Coker's job.

Offense: Shannon has brought in Patrick Nix from Georgia Tech as offensive coordinator in the hope of restoring some of Miami's former offensive firepower. Nix will decide between contenders for the quarterback job: senior Kyle Wright who started in 2005 and 2006 until he was injured and Kirby Freeman, a promising but inexperienced junior. The receiving corps has promise and running back Javarris James, just a sophomore, is ready to show his stuff. With young players and new systems, it's going to take awhile for the offense to gel.

Defense: With nine starters returning, this is definitely the strength of the team. In addition to Playboy All America defensive end Calais Campbell, Kenny Phillips is a game-turner from his safety position. Tim Walton, former defensive backs coach for Miami, takes over as coordinator.

Schedule: Challenging with away games at Oklahoma, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Boston College.

Prediction: 7-5
