30. BYU
Coach:
Bronco Mendenhall
Last year:
11-2, including a 38-8 victory over Oregon in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.
Offense:
There are big shoes to fill here with the graduation of do-everything quarterback John Beck. Sophomore Max Hall, a transfer from Arizona, will get the nod with promising quarterback prospect Cade Cooper transferring out, JUCO transfer Brendan Gaskins is Hall's backup by default. Tight end Jonny Harline and running back Curtis Brown also have to be replaced so it could take awhile before BYU gets firing on all offensive cylinders.
Defense:
BYU appears to be in much better shape on this side of the ball to start the season. Inside strength will come from three promising sophomore tackles: Russell Tialavea, Jan Jorgensen and Ian Dulan. Quinn Gooch is solid at the safety position.
Schedule:
The early schedule will be a challenge with games against Arizona, UCLA and Tulsa. However, the MWC schedule is better with BYU playing its toughest opponents, TCU and Utah, at home.
Prediction:
8-4
