34. Maryland
Coach:
Ralph Friedgen
Last year:
An impressive 9-4 including a 24-7 victory over Purdue in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Offense:
The Terps have a very strong running back duo in Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore who combined for over 1,500 yards rushing last season. Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey has explosive speed and Joey Haynos is steady at tight end. The problem for Friedgen is replacing two-year starting quarterback Sam Hollenbach. Last season's backup Jordan Steffy is in line for the job but has little experience. The offensive line should be good as long as injuries can be avoided.
Defense:
Despite returning Playboy All America Erin Henderson, the rest of the linebacking corps will be untested. A couple of holes will have to be filled in the secondary as well.
Schedule:
How well the Terps do against West Virginia at home and then Wake Forest and Rutgers on the road in September will determine the success of this season.
Prediction:
Too many questions for anything better than 7-5.
