39. Utah
Coach:
Kyle Whittingham is in his second season after replacing Urban Meyer, now at Florida.
Last year:
8-5. The Utes beat Tulsa 25-13 in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Offense:
Junior quarterback Brian Johnson returns after missing all of last season due to ACL surgery. Johnson led the Mountain West Conference in total offense in 2005 with 337.0 yards per game. The Utes offensive line, which averages more than 300 pounds per man, will protect Johnson as he looks downfield for receivers Brent Casteel and Derrek Richards. Louie Sakoda is an excellent place kicker and punter.
Defense:
The success of the defense will hinge on the development of an almost entirely new secondary as well as two new starting tackles. Utah has the league's best linebacker in Joe Jianonni and its best defensive end in Martail Burnett.
Schedule:
Road tests at Oregon State, Louisville, TCU and BYU.
Prediction:
7-5
