40. San Jose State
Coach:
Dick Tomey, who did an incredible job turning around a woeful program that was on the verge of extinction.
Last year:
9-4, including a bowl win over New Mexico, the Spartans first bowl appearance since 1990.
Offense:
Tomey turned quarterback Adam Tafralis from an inconsistent performer who sometimes seemed he had no clue as to where the ball was going into a highly efficient player last season who completed 66 % of his passes for over 2,200 yards and 21 touchdowns. With a strong running game that features Yonus Davis, James Callier and Patrick Perry, the Spartans will be steady if not spectacular on this side of the ball. Tomey will, however, need to find replacements for a corps of graduated wide receivers.
Defense:
Good and getting better. The best player on defense is Playboy All America Dwight Lowery at cornerback followed closely by senior linebacker Matt Castelo. If the defense can turn it up another notch and rush the passer more effectively, the Spartans will prove that last year was no fluke.
Schedule:
Challenging. SJS opens with four road games -- Arizona State, Kansas State, Stanford and Utah State. If Tomey can squeeze out two wins, the Spartans will have another successful season.
Prediction:
7-5
