48. Virginia

Coach:
Al Groh

Last season:
9-4. The Cavaliers stumbled in the Gator Bowl to Texas Tech, 31-28.

Studs: Most of Virginia's studs either graduated into the NFL or were declared academically ineligible in the offseason. Defensive end Chris Long was the number two pick in the NFL draft and guard Branden Albert cut out early to the pros. Quarterback Jameel Sewell was poised for a big season until he ran into academic problems. However, there are still a few impact players to keep an eye on. Left tackle Eugene Monroe could be a first round draft pick next year. Peter Lalich at quarterback doesn't have experience but he does have a rocket arm. Ras-l Dowling has the talent to develop into an outstanding cornerback.

Scoop: Al Groh played a bit of the magician last year as he guided an unheralded Virginia team to nine wins. Six of the victories coming by margins of five points or less. With all the personnel losses he's faced with this year, he'll have to be Houdini to win more games than he loses. Somehow, we think Groh will pull it off.

Prediction: 7-5
