Don't let that innocent-looking leprechaun outside Mickey's Irish Pub fool you; there are shenanigans aplenty inside. Located stumbling distance from the University of Nebraska in downtown Lincoln, Mickey's opened its doors in 1999 as a traditional Irish Pu b, but with dozens of other bars near campus, good beer and good cheer just weren't cutting it. So Mickey's got a makeover -- and a couple of dancing cages. Now Huskers have dubbed the joint "Mickey's Irish Club" for its stiff libations and even stiffer patrons getting jiggy on the dance floor.
The Scene: "May you be drinking a Guinness in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead" is engraved above the line of booths at Mickey's. Authentic touches like antique boxing gloves and Irish flags give Mickey's bar section an Old World flavor, but the black lacy bra and tie-dye panties hanging from a model World War II airplane reveal that more than just the Irish are getting lucky at this joint. "It's a bar where Nebraskans come not to act like Nebraskans," says Clint, a senior majoring in psychology. "The liquor flows and the credit cards get charged fast."
South of the bar is the newly expanded dance floor, where Huskers come to get smashed and groped by townie girls dipped in body glitter and squeezed into skin-tight jeans. DJs mix Top 40 favorites with rap and monster rock:
"You know it's a good remix when you can hear the crowd singing along above the music," says Scott, a bartender and UNL business major. Looking to hide out from the hedonism? Head upstairs to shoot some pool or grab a booth for excellent viewing of the madness below.
Chicks at Mickey's: If the two newly added steel cages are indicators of the breed of lassie at Mickey's, then slap a parental advisory on the poles. This is where Nebraska girls bump and grind, catching the eyes (and dollar bills) of every guy in the house. These gals aren't just kissing the Blarney Stone in there, either. Sláinte!
When to Go: Huskers pack the pub Thursday through Saturday, so be prepared to shell out a $1 cover and wait in a long, long line unless you tout a VIP pass to jump ahead. Once you're inside, the crowd's shoulder-to-shoulder drunken sway will erase all your frustrations. Be sure to stop by on St. Patrick's Day, when Mickey's gets back to its roots with free corned beef and cabbage for Nebraskans brave enough to taste it.
Dress Code: The new rules -- and there are 12 -- are posted by the doorway (no backpacks and no camouflage? We're not kidding.). Athletic jerseys are only allowed on game days; girls, but not guys, can wear sleeveless shirts. Their sleeves aren't the only thing that's missing: "The real code is to bare as much skin as possible, especially in the summer," says Rochelle, a Mickey's regular.
At the Bar: Mickey's takes its best shot with Liquid Cocaine, a seductive and fatal mix of amaretto, Southern Comfort, coconut rum, pineapple and orange juice for $3.25 ($4.50 for a pint -- if you can handle it). Thursday is the night for real beer drinkers, with 25-cent draws of all 26 domestics and imports on tap. And don't forget to try the Red Leprechaun, a house favorite.
