College athletes graduate, coaches get fired and those old stadium ushers, well, they die. But there's one faction in the college sports world whose service never wavers: the mascot. At Auburn University in Alabama, a furry tiger named Aubie can be found pacing the sidelines on any given Saturday, whipping 85,000 fans into a frenzy. Fueled by Aubie's frantic antics, the Auburn Tigers tallied a Top 20 finish last year.
Exuding tons of cat class and style, Aubie was voted the top college mascot four times during the Nineties by the Universal Cheerleaders Association. Aubie sat down with Playboy.com for the debut of Mascots Talk Back. He discussed the enchanted life of an Auburn legend, what happens when other mascots yank his tail and just what goes down in the Aubie Shack with those smoking-hot Tiger cheerleaders.
Playboy.com: How do you get pumped up for a game?
Aubie: I lead the team on the Tiger Walk, which is a big tradition at Auburn. We parade from the dorms to the stadium two hours before kickoff, and the fans cheer as I lead the way.
PB: Do you get dressed with the players?
Aubie: No, I get dressed in the Aubie Shack, a trailer underneath the stadium, next to where the cheerleaders keep their stuff. There's a couch in there, and it's where we keep all of the props we use during the game.
PB: Do you invite the cheerleaders over to the Aubie Shack?
Aubie: No. Aubie is a very mysterious character -- no one can ever see him get ready. The only ones allowed in the Aubie Shack are Aubie and the opposing mascot.
PB: Is there a specific pre-game meal that you partake in?
Aubie: Alligator tails, preferably from the University of Florida. Catnip is always good, too. My favorite cereal was Aubie Flakes, but they don't make them anymore.
PB: Have you ever been hurt in the line of duty?
Aubie: Nothing serious, though there have certainly been injuries to my predecessors. One Aubie jumped into some hedges and landed on a fence post. He had a bruise on his back the size of a basketball, but he stayed in the game.
PB: Do the ladies go nuts for you?
Aubie: Aubie's a big flirt with the girls. Everyone loves Aubie; he's a man's man and a ladies' man at the same time.
PB: Has the costume ever helped you get some lovin'?
Aubie: I don't think I'm at liberty to say anything about that.
PB: Do you have a signature move?
Aubie: Aubie's move is walking like George Jefferson with a hitch. And Aubie can dance -- Michael Jackson's Bad is his favorite song.
PB: Do you ever end up duking it out with other mascots?
Aubie: Aubie tries to stay away from fights, but there have been a few. When other mascots infringe on my territory, I try to make sure that Auburn always comes out on top.
PB: Who's the coolest mascot out there?
Aubie: Aubie's best friend is Colonel Reb at Ole Miss, this old soldier with a big head.
PB: I heard the Clemson Tiger say you stole some of his moves. Is that true?
