Babes, Beers and Barbeques with Spike Mendelsohn

The idea of sparking up the barbeque, cracking open an ice-cold beer and celebrating with friends is synonymous with the Fourth of July, so what better chef to talk about the fixings that go with this holiday than the Good Stuff man himself, Spike Mendelsohn. Before Michelle and Barack Obama became vocal fans of his eats, thousands of viewers rooted for Spike on the hit reality show Top Chef back in 2008. He may not have won the title of Top Chef, but he definitely won the hearts of many with his inspired versions of classic American comfort food. With his bestselling cookbook The Good Stuff Cookbook: Burgers, fries, shakes, wedges and more being a staple cookbook in many foodies’ homes since 2010, his show Life After Top Chef in pre-production and his Good Stuff Eatery chain (located in Washington, DC) where he is executive chef, it’s safe to say that this chef is all American

Playboy.com: When prepping for a July Fourth party, what are four things you absolutely need?

Spike Mendelsohn:

- Large spatulas and wooden spoons

- Twine to tie and truss things

- Coconuts (for serving drinks in, of course, can't get enough coconut water!)

- Suntan lotion to apply to my guests.

Playboy.com: What is your drink of choice when you’re barbequing up a storm?

Mendelsohn: Sex on the Beach with an extra helping of sex.

Playboy.com: What signature barbeque dish do you find yourself constantly stuck making at parties?

Mendelsohn: One of my signature dishes is cooking up some "Finger-Lickin' Chicken Wings." This dish is as simple as tossing the wings with olive oil, salt, pepper and chopped rosemary.  Then coat with a glaze made of two parts honey, one part Sriracha. Bake wings on a cooking sheet at 400 degrees for 40-45 minutes until crispy.

Playboy.com: We want to put chicken wings on barbequed pizza.  Are you going to stop us?

Mendelsohn: No! Go for it. I love creative dishes but I also love the straight-up classics too.

Playboy.com: Who is your favorite Playmate?

Mendelsohn: Sara Jean Underwood.

Playboy.com: Do you have any debaucherous July Fourth stories?

Mendelsohn: It involved x, y, z and some centerfolds in a makeshift grotto.

Playboy.com: What kind of music do you listen to while you’re cooking?

Mendelsohn: Probably my favorite band of all time — J Roddy Walston and the Business. Their latest album never gets old. Check them out live too if they come to your town!

Playboy.com: If you could only pick two, which would you choose: A posse of hot women, the recipe for the perfect burger or an unlimited supply of your favorite beer?

Mendelsohn: Hot women and, oh, hot women. Sorry, I can’t help myself. Plus I got the burger thing down.

Playboy.com: Anything you want to plug?

Mendelsohn: If any Playmates are in the DC area and want to come visit me at my restaurants, please do! The food is on me.
