While this column has spent a fair amount of time critiquing sports concepts, this week we thought we would check out the crossover market with one of the stars of Detroit 2012: The Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid.
In production as a traditional combustion model since 2008, this concept follows Volvo’s legacy of designing well-built, high-performance vehicles that stand out from their competitors both in style and on the road. Utilizing a system marketed as “Pure Hybrid Power,” the XC60 Plug-In brings together three vehicle modes that regulate what power sources are being used to create a ‘user menu’ of efficiency options, with the ability to give its state-of-the-art four-cylinder the power of a V6.
In Pure mode, the primary source of power is the electric motor which produces zero gas emissions and has a range of 35 miles, perfect for city commuters or trips to the beer store. In the standard Hybrid mode, the car’s electric and gas engines work in tandem to provide adequate power for your needs while cutting gas usage when not needed. In this mode, CO2 is limited to 53 g/km at 50 miles to the gallon (combined engines). Under these circumstances, the car can travel 600 miles without stopping; that’s roughly the distance from Charleston to Miami!
However, when push comes to shove the XC60 Hybrid has the Power mode to rely on. This unique feature gives this crossover the power of 350 horses, combining the power of both its engines that give it the ability to go zero to sixty in just 5.8 seconds!
In addition to its tech specs which also feature AWD (using separate engines for different axels), the interior makes use of the built-in, online infotainment system which integrates mobile apps and monitors the energy levels. The lithium-ion battery conveniently recharges through a regular outlet for 3.5-7.5 hours depending on the voltage; making it easy to just unplug and go.
