Dinner with Mei-Ling: Sin City Eats

By Mei-Ling Lam

Playmate Mei Ling Lam spends the weekend in Las Vegas and dishes on her favorite places to eat while visiting sin city.

Dining in Vegas is like eating cotton candy. You know it’s always going to be tasty! With 22 restaurants at Mandalay Bay, I was having foodgasms three times a day…That has to be a sin!

Although there are hundreds of restaurants in Las Vegas that would put me in the confession box on a daily basis, I committed to eating only at Mandalay Bay. There were more than enough choices and multiple cuisines to choose from! I had a few favorites that I suggest you visit if you’re ever in Sin City.

My first night in Vegas, I set out for a juicy steak; I was craving one like an animal! Almost every restaurant served some sort of steak, but I wanted a full-on steak house. So we went to Stripsteak! The whole atmosphere was spot on. It was a modern alternative to the traditional steak house setting.

Lucky for us, the chef was serving up a complimentary appetizer that night which happened to be my favorite, good ol’ french fries seasoned with Old Bay, served up with three different dipping sauces. They were so yummy!

For dinner I had a feast; don’t judge. I ordered the 10-ounce all-natural Angus beef filet mignon cooked to medium. It was very tender and juicy, with amazing flavor. You could taste the smoky mesquite. One of the best filets I have ever had! Along with my filet, I ordered the spinach soufflé with parmesan cream and a “classic” baked potato with the works. The spinach soufflé was fireworks in my mouth every time I took a bite. That’s when you know you got something tasty!

Stripsteak was my top choice out of the whole visit to Vegas. I always love a great meal, but I also love great service. Stripsteak went above and beyond with their highly trained staff. Very well done!

Then there is my strong love for Italian food. If I could choose one more ethnicity to add into my mix, it would be Italian! I eat pasta more often than not, so of course I had to have some. Wolfgang Puck’s first Italian restaurant, Trattoria del Lupo, was first on my list.

With a lovely contemporary setting, warm colors and a wine list to die for, Lupo’s gives you a taste of authentic Italy. I love trying different versions of calamari, so that was the first dish I ordered. The calamari fritti came with some grilled zucchini, gremolata aioli and basil. Sometimes I find calamari to be way overdone or way under, but it was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right.

For my pasta, I had the ravioli ai quattro formaggi, which is a four-cheese ravioli with tomato sauce and basil. We sat right next to the glass-enclosed area where fresh pasta is made in house daily, which was a treat to see. The ravioli was very light and had a perfected taste of richness.

Out of my three favorite desserts, tiramisu is probably number one. Lupo’s hit it out of the park with their tiramisu. It was absolutely heavenly! The server convinced us it was a big enough slice for two, but once it was brought to the table, I easily could have eaten it by myself. It was so light and creamy, with a hint of sweetness from the cocoa. It may have been the best I have ever had!

You can’t go wrong with eating in Vegas as long as you steer clear of the free buffets. I highly suggest you try my two favorite spots at Mandalay Bay; you know I wouldn’t let you down! Enjoy! Oxox
