Miss March 2013 Ashley Doris talked to us about becoming a Playmate by
accident, her craziest Mansion story and her pride at being the
first-ever Playmate from Connecticut.
Playboy.com: What do you bring to the Playboy family that is unique from other Playmates?
I’m actually the first Playmate from Connecticut, ever, since Playboy has been in business in 1953, so that’s unique and really cool. I’m also biracial, my mom is black and my dad is white, and I think that’s pretty unique. From year to year there are a few Playmates that are biracial; I think that’s really cool [that] I’m one of them because I think people can identify with that.
Playboy.com: Tell us about your first experience with Playboy.
The casting I went to this past September was my first real
face-to-face experience with Playboy.
I had never actually seen a Playboy;
my first time seeing one was this past November because my friend had it on his
coffee table. Britany Nola was on the cover. That was really cool because I had
never seen one of their pictorials before. The casting in September was a great
experience, so that made me feel really comfortable with the situation.
Playboy.com: You did a shoot for Playboy Plus before your Playmate test; how did that come about?
It was all sort of a big mistake/coincidence; I wasn’t seeking it out. I was doing a bikini contest in Vegas and me and my roomie for the contest came back to the Hard Rock Hotel after a night on the Strip and there happened to be a Playboy casting near the elevator. She was like, “Oh, Ashley, we should do it. We’re in Vegas; why not!?” I was just like, “No, I don’t think I should do it. What are the chances, why even bother?” She convinced me and we both did it; we were each other’s support system mentally. I got a call to do the Playboy Plus shoot two or three weeks later. I literally could not believe that they wanted me. It worked out, so it’s all good. You should always take a chance in Vegas.
Playboy.com: How did this translate to you becoming a Playmate?
The photographer for the Playboy Plus shoot squinted at me for about three seconds and was like, “You should cast for Playmate,” so he forwarded my info to the West Coast editor for digitals. Digitals are basically when you get nude and they shoot front, side, back, face. I was sitting in the makeup room and the photographer for the real casting was walking by, and he was like, “Excuse me, miss…We have some extra time, we think you’re very beautiful; would you like to test shoot?” The whole situation was like a domino effect of coincidences; it was super cool.
Playboy.com: What is some advice you think everyone should take?
Some advice for boys these days is to always be as chivalrous as possible. Last year a boy told me chivalry is dead, and I disagree with that. I think there are gentlemen out there. I think a guy should really try to open doors for girls and be as kind as possible; that’s the way it should be with guys and girls. Sometimes I think that gets lost today. I don’t think chivalry is dead.
Playboy.com: Name something that is overrated.
I think that hot girls are overrated. It’s cool to be pretty and hot a lot of times, especially in the town I’m from, but maybe they [hot girls] aren’t the nicest or most relatable people. I think people should really go for personality. It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or girl, personality is important. For me liking guys it just matters if you’re funny and we get along and if you get my sense of humor.
Playboy.com: Name something that is underrated.
I think a best friendship is underrated. I don’t think that people realize how important having a true best friend is. I think people are really quick to say, “Love you girl, bye, love you girl.” Most of the time that’s not real love. When you have a best friend that’s something you should value forever. I don’t have a best friend right now and I miss that so much because I’m staying in California right now, not Connecticut where I’m from. I miss my true friends and wish I had a best friend to talk to every day.
Playboy.com: What qualities drive you wild in a man?
What I look for is a guy that doesn’t tell me I’m pretty every five minutes. When you’re on a date with a guy and he’s like, “You look really great,” “Wow, that coat looks great on you,” “Wow, your hair looks so nice,” it’s kind of like, “Okay, overkill!” Let’s talk about things that make us laugh, let’s talk about funny stuff, let’s talk about our favorite TV shows. I love Workaholics, Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy. I think it’s good when a guy is into what you’re into, that’s hot! There was a marathon the other Sunday for The Walking Dead and I literally sat at my TV from ten A.M. to six P.M. and watched the entire season three of The Walking Dead. If a guy can sit with me through all of that and we can enjoy it together and eat food all day, that’s awesome.
Playboy.com: Where can we find you when you’re not modeling for Playboy?
I love to garden. In the summer I always keep a garden; we have so many vegetables in Connecticut we barely have to buy produce in the summer because we grow that many vegetables. We have five cats at my parents’ house, so on a good day we like to take them all out on a supervised little journey into the backyard. I love cooking; I can cook all day long and not get bored. It’s really the little stuff that matters.
Playboy.com: What is your signature dish?
My signature dish is brisket. It takes four hours but it’s so worth it because you could literally serve it with two spoons and pick it up and put it on your plate, and there are root vegetables I serve with it and a tomato-based sauce. Once you take the sauce out of the oven you have to reduce it for half an hour more. You’ve been waiting all these hours but you have to wait a bit longer just to make it perfect. It’s something awesome for winter, it’s delicious.
Playboy.com: Have you been to the Playboy Mansion, and what is your craziest Mansion story to date?
I stayed there for 21 days for my centerfold shoot. I think the craziest story that I can tell is when me and two other blonde girls from Fun in the Sun on Sundays, we were all skinny-dipping in the grotto. We took a photo of all three of us turned around so all of our butts are lined up; it was just so cute!
Playboy.com: What is something your fans might be surprised to know about you?
They might be surprised by the fact that I never go out and I never go clubbing. I feel like when someone thinks of a Playmate they think that she’s out all the time. Right now I’m in my bathrobe and I’m about to watch Sons of Anarchy on my laptop; this is a typical day for me besides working out. I guess I’m not that much of a party girl, but maybe that will change when I do all of my promotions.
Playboy.com: What makes you feel sexiest?
A nice pair of heels and a really well fitted dress. Something that’s not too spandexy but that lays on your body really well so it shows off your curves in a flattering way. And when my hair is all blown out and I’m going out for dinner. That’s the sexiest thing ever, when you look really good and you’re about to eat something really good, that’s perfect.
Playboy.com: What are your goals for 2013?
I really want to explore every opportunity that I can. I’ve being speaking with some really great people in L.A. I just want to get out there. I feel like I’ve been indoors so much, so one of my goals is to literally get out and to meet a ton of cool people. I really want to hang with the upcoming Playmates; we don’t even know who they are yet, but I’m so excited to meet them. I’m excited to meet the summer and fall Playmates; that’s going to be very awesome.Follow Ashley on Twitter @MissAshleyDoris, Instagram or like her on Facebook.
