Get a Nightlife: Dance Dance Revolution

By Crystal McCahill

Crystal breaks down the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to dancing in public. Plus, check out her "Pun-ny Joke" Twitter contest for a chance to win two free tickets to the Deja Voodoo After-Party series in New Orleans over Halloween weekend!

Each time I get ready to go out—in a towel, hair wet, iPod blasting—I keep telling myself I should offer up a Crystal-approved artist playlist to give you a feel for the tunes that help get me pumped and ready for wherever my nightlife takes me.

From new stuff to timeless oldies-but-goodies, I give you my list of classic go-tos and recent staples. Enjoy!

What I’m listening to now:

Girl Talk     Chris Isaak     Florence and the Machine    The Black Keys     Candle Box     Thievery Corporations   David Cook     Kanye     Elvis     Leona Lewis     Britney Spears (her new album)    Foster the People     Pink   John Legend     Radiohead     Seether     Default     Foo Fighters     Mazzy Star   Adele     Shwayze     OneRepublic

I’ll admit that putting on old-Oldies is usually my first choice for the nights when I’m really dragging and need to rally like a champ. Call me a nerd but I can honestly say there’s nothing like dancing around my apartment to Motown to get me going. You know you make me wanna SHOUT!, put your hands up and…

Speaking of dancing, I was unlucky to witness a group of guys breaking out their best “robot” and “worm” at the clubs last weekend and found myself wondering why we haven’t come up with better, less tired techniques that are safe for your average non-coordinated guy to pull off. If ever in doubt, boys, please check your  lawnmower and fish-reeling techniques at the door. (Weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs are about the only occasions for busting out said moves—if you’re not there to impress—but even then, I’m not so sure.) And for those of you who think you’re tapping into your inner Rico Suave by pulling out your whipping-bending-spinning moves with your lady at a crowded club, please tone it down! More likely than not, you’re making the people around you spill their drinks and wondering what’s up with you—i.e. “that guy.”

I’m not saying you need to be Michael Jackson good, but a little practice can go a long way. There’s nothing more romantic than taking dance lessons with your guy. Try a beginner’s class or rent a video and practice in your own living room. Because at the end of the day, nothing says sexy quite like a man with real moves. With that, I’ll leave you with one of the funniest YouTube videos I’ve stumbled across this year. See if you can learn something!

For those of you looking for something fun to do over Halloween weekend (still can’t believe it’s Sept!), I’m excited to be giving away 2 free VIP tickets (plus guest) to the 3-Day Deja Voodoo After-Party Series this October in New Orleans. Because I’m a sucker for overtly cheesy, Popsicle stick-like jokes, all you have to do is:

  • Tweet your best “pun-ny joke” to @Playboy on Twitter, between Thursday, September 1st and Wednesday, September 7th. (You can submit only 1 joke for the chance to win.)

-There will be 2 winners selected and notified on Thursday, September 8.
