This Week: Five Outdoor Winter Workouts!
Last week we talked about how to avoid the dreaded winter weight gain or holiday spare tire. This Workout Wednesday I would like to show you how to use the winter to have fun trying new forms of exercise and get in the best shape of your life while you’re at it!
There are so many fun activities that we can only do during the winter months and most of them are calorie torchers! So why not get out there and try something new!
Here are my top 5 winter workouts!
If you have ever spent a day on the slopes then you know how amazing a workout this is. Your legs and glutes are in constant motion, your abs have to be tight to keep your balance. Plus, you’re losing 400+ calories for every hour you are out there having fun! You won’t even notice how much you have worked your body until you wake up the next morning with sore muscles.
Now, if you are like me then you are no pro. In fact, I don’t think I have ever made it down an entire hill without at least one wipe out. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get out there, have some fun and get a great workout. Falling and having to pick yourself up only adds to calories burned!
- Ice Skating!
Not only is your local ice rink a great spot to meet cute girls, but it’s also an amazing way to get a killer lower body workout! So strap on those dusty skates and hit the rink or lake (just make sure it’s frozen first). Spending just two hours pumping your legs and keeping your self upright on those skates blasts about 800 calories! Show off your moves and you may even land a date out of it! You can also join a winter hockey league. Weekly games will keep you in tip-top shape!
No, it’s not just for kids anymore! Head for the hills and grab your best crazy carpet or toboggan, a group of friends and you’re in for a treat! I’m sure you haven’t forgotten how much fun it is to hop on that sled and ride it all the way down that steep hill, racing your friends! I do it every year. You will have so much fun that you won’t even notice that for every slide down you have a big walk up a snowy hill, carrying a sled. You’ll get some great cardio and an upper body workout, so don’t be afraid to be a kid again and get out there. You can burn up to 350 calories per hour!
- Take a Hike!
Yep, I said it! If you live in a snowy climate then strap on those snowshoes and head outside! Being Canadian, we had them in the house all the time and I would use them to walk to the store when there was a ton of snow. Not only is it fun, but it is an amazing quad, hamstring, glutes, and calf workout. Guys, you need to start focusing more on that lower body to help build and balance your upper body! While you’re at it, your body will torch about 450 calories per hour!
- Cross Country Skiing!
If you are too fearful of downhill skiing, this is a great alternative. Whenever I get to the slopes with my friends I always choose the cross-country trails. It’s very peaceful, you get to see some real nature (I always run into large groups of deer) and you get a killer workout without all the wipeouts and snow somehow making it into your underwear. If you keep a fast pace you can burn the most calories of all my fun winter sports, up to 500 in just one hour!!
I don’t know about you but I am beyond excited to bundle up in my winter gear and head outdoors! Don’t let winter give you the blues. Instead, take advantage of all it has to offer and get your body in the best shape so when spring hits you will be showing off your 6 pack instead of hiding your beer belly!
