This week belongs to Captain America. The movie Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters this Friday and the game Captain America: Super Soldier is out now for Nintendo 3DS, Wii, PS3, and XBOX 360.

It's been a superhero filled summer with Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America getting big game releases. I thought I'd look back over video game history and pick some of my favorite superhero video games of all time.

5) Maximum Carnage

It's a tough call between this and Ultimate Spider-Man, but there's something badass about the battle between Spider-man, Venom, Carnage and a host of other Spider-man characters that makes this game memorable.  Plus, remember those red cartridges that the game came on? That was awesome.

4) X-Men Origins: Wolverine

After playing the game, you wished that the movie had been the same kind of fun. Hugh Jackman was on board so the character was authentic, but the gory, violent game play made for the kind of slash 'em up Wolverine adventure every fan has been dying for since video games were invented.

3) The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

Hulk SMASH! Anything. Everything. The coolest part of any superhero game is if it really captures what it feels like to be the hero. Superman games where Superman has energy or life that can be drained.

2) Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

The best part about the Marvel vs. Campcom titles is taking your favorite Capcom characters and battling classic Marvel superheroes and villains. If you know me, you know my favorite Street Fighter character is Chun-Li. I really loved pitting Chun-Li against Marvel babes like Psylocke and Rogue. There was no shortage of awesome match-ups with almost 60 playable characters. This game was epic.

1) Batman: Arkham Asylum

This one is just obvious. It topped many best of lists in 2009 and the sequel topped my list of most anticipated games of 2011 earlier this year because of my love for this game. Everything came together on this game to make it simply perfect. There haven't been a lot of great Batman games. Some argue that the NES Batman was the other stellar entry, but most of the Batman titles have been awful. This upped the ante on graphics, combat and gadgets. It also made very good use of Batman's detective skills which really differentiated Batman: Arkham Asylumfrom any other Batman title.

How'd I do? Are you super mad that X-Men for the Game Gear didn't make the list? Are you willing to argue that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are superheroes and deserve a spot on the list for Turtles in Time? Send me a tweet on my twitter account @gamernextdoor and let me know what superhero games made your list.
