After quitting The Tonight Show in 2010, talk show host Conan O'Brien had no choice but to hit the road if he wanted to keep performing for fans. Backed by the Legally Prohibited Band, members of his previous house band, O'Brien crooned and clowned his way across North America, meeting up with star studded friends and rehashing favorite gags from Late Night and The Tonight Show. Between the banter, videos and audience participation, Conan and his band performed a fitting mix of eclectic covers songs like "Polk Salad Annie", "King Creole", "Flight Rock" and "Seven Nation Army".
Now Conan fans will be able to relive the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour for the second time this year through the album release of Conan O'Brien Can't Stop. While many have heard the songs on vinyl via a Conan O'Brien Live at Third Man recording or bootlegged through YouTube; the album, released as an audible companion to Rodman Flender's Conan Can't Stop documentary, is the missing piece that many followers have been lusting after since the Late Night feud madness.
But what is all the fuss about?
Any man with a well-documented past of strumming a guitar while rehearsing lines, hosting a hit late night show with the first televised appearance of major acts of today, along with a friendship with rock legend Jack White (prompting some of the greatest jams on air between host and guest to date) deserves his own well-mixed live album. Simply put, Conan is a true entertainer: on television, stage, film or record. As a man who has never been a stranger to music, it's fitting for Conan to have an album of his own.*
The songs on the album, ranging from tongue in cheek recounts of the now dated late night argument ("I Will Survive") to enjoyable covers of classic songs ("The Weight") perfectly captures the odd and humbling situation Conan and fans were in while the tour took place. Even without watching the award winning documentary, the Conan O'Brien Can't Stop soundtrack is an entertaining way to reminisce on one man's uncommon journey across the county that ended with him back on our television sets.
*We're not forgetting the two vinyl releases by Third Man Records.
