The alt. LA band Silversun Pickups are back with yet another dreamy pop rock album.
In the spring of 2010, L.A. rockers Silversun Pickups were opening for Muse on the U.S. leg of their tour. They looked like ants in comparison to the mammoth set the English band had set up, but their intense guitar riffs and dreamy vocals filled the stadiums. They were nominated for Best New Artist at the 52nd Grammy Awards, despite the fact that back in 2006 their song “Lazy Eye” was featured in the highly popular video games Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour, they appeared at Coachella and opened for Foo Fighters in Edinburgh and Dublin. It seemed that 2009 was their year, and their good luck may repeat again in 2012.
Their third album, Neck of the Woods, debuting tomorrow, is yet another solid album for the band. The first single, “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings),” sounds like a mixture of Coheed and Cambria, Zwan and maybe a little Garbage. The airy vocal tracks fade in and out between the drums, synth and dreamy guitar riffs. Depending on how you’re feeling when you listen to the track “Skin Graph,” you can either dance your little heart out or wallow in your own misery. “Make Believe” has a very “Adam’s Song” feel to it, but it may just be the very similar bass line.
There’s not much to say about the album, really, and that’s a good thing. Silversun Pickups have their own unique sound that is showcased time and time again on their albums. They’re great at what they do, and we’re happy to see that they’re not conforming to any sort of musical fad. When one of their songs comes on, you know what it is, and you know to appreciate it.
