Just like Nicki’s array of accents from cockney to quick-witted bimbo Barbie, this superstar’s sophomore album is all over the place.
I have an un-healthy relationship with hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj wherein only two extreme versions of myself enjoy her music. One is the productive girl who wakes up at 6:30am to fit in a morning jog before work. She gets on the treadmill and turns on "Super Bass" to get her heart rate up to a reasonable BPM. The other, is a debauched bitch who hops from party to party on weekends. She’s notoriously known to spill her drink unforgivingly on girls who won’t stop screaming in front of the DJ booth about who would have the cutest headphones if they were MC’s. Hearing the fourth song "Beez in the Trap" off of Nicki’s album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded for the first time at an afterhours loft party this weekend, I anxiously awaited the time put aside to review her album. But just like Nicki’s array of accents from cockney to quick-witted bimbo Barbie, this superstar’s sophomore album is all over the place.
As one of the best MC’s of hip-hop, woman or not, you would think this talented artist would take the time to perfect at least one of her musical skills to prominently stand out on this highly anticipated album. Instead, Nicki steers away from her rapping roots track by track (was "Marilyn Monroe" written by Katy Perry?) and flings herself into the arms of Pop listeners hoping that they will lovingly catch her fall. Featuring a slew of heavy hitting artists like Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy and Drake you would think that this sort of album would write itself.
Despite its flaws, half of the album is untouchable. With solid tracks like "Champion", "I am Your Leader" and "Roman Holiday", Nicki showcases her always delightfully unpredictable vocal talent. With the help of a slew of producers on this album, tracks like "Starships" are hitting platinum and silver tongued lines that make her known as the bad girl in pop are littered across the album in "Come On A Cone" and "Stupid Hoe".
But nineteen tracks of Nicki playing house across the musical genre board is tiring. Yes everyone wants to collaborate with her. Yes everyone wants to appear or work on her album. But at the end of the day, people want to hear Nicki Minaj sing about her metaphorical penis and talk shit about how no one liked her VMA’s stunt.
Roman Reloaded is great taken apart, but not when it’s together. For now Nicki is best to stay on your iPod for gym mixes and to request at clubs. With an album like this, Nicki Minaj won’t be coming home with us anytime soon.
