Play-By-Playmate: Serie-ous Sports Stuff

Sports in April are all about the series. Playoff series, opening series, everything’s a series and it’s all very serie-ous.

Well I got my fill of serie-ousness this weekend and let me tell you, I have a few thoughts about how things went down.

The Canucks/Kings Series

Last week I said the road back to the Stanley Cup would be a tough one for Vancouver but I didn’t think it would be this tough. They are down three games to none and Luongo has been putting on one of his patented playoff performances which for the record, is a bad thing. The ‘Nucks are in hot water. They have definitely not looked like a team that hoisted the President’s Trophy a week ago. They have definitely not been playing like their season is on the line (which it now officially is) and they have definitely not been able to figure out Jonathon Quick. They will have to do all those things if they want to crawl out of a 0-3 hole.

The Penguins/Flyers Series

Honestly, I expected this to be a bloodbath on the ice, in the stands and all over Pennsylvania. But it has been anything but. In three games, these two teams have managed to rack up 32 goals. 32! They haven’t had any time to fight! I don’t even know why they bother having goaltenders! Both teams should just pull them and play the full sixty minutes with six men. And the biggest surprise is that it’s not even Sidney Crosby and company scoring. It’s Philly! The Broad street Bullies!  They are officially up 3-0 so like the Canucks, the Penguins need to find a way to get something done so they don’t get swept.

The Rays Series

As much as I love me a good hockey game, I think you all know by now that I’m a baseball girl when football’s out of season and I spent last weekend at the park watching the Rays sweep the Yankees out of town. Then I watched them steal one away from Justin Verlander. And then everything went south.

After starting 4-0, the Rays dropped two to Detroit and three to the Sox and are sitting dead even at 5-5. But that’s baseball. It’s a teeter-tottery type of game. One minute you’re hot, the next minute you’re not but I think just about everyone would agree that ten games into the season is no time to start panicking. Unless…

Your manager makes a series of damaging statements about your play

So this isn’t your standard type of series, but Bobby Valentine sure went about calling out his players in a weird way. When asked what he thought was wrong with starting third baseman Kevin Youkilis, he said he didn’t think he was as “physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past.”

Now I’m no manager, I’m just sitting here on the sidelines calling ‘em as I see ‘em but that seems like pretty harsh criticism coming from a new manager in a new town, commenting on a team leader he’s only seen play for ten games. It’s ballsy is what it is. The last thing that Red Sox team needs is more controversy in the clubhouse.

And finally…on a Serie-ous note…

It was great to see everyone out for Jackie Robinson day yesterday. Baseball has always been a game full of history and it’s amazing to see so many fans and players and coaches support one of the games most important figures. This is a great tradition to guarantee future generations never forget the role he played not only on the field but in everyday life.
