Denim jackets are often thought of as being only a young man's game, but that doesn't mean they are unapproachable. If you can nail the fit, you are good to go. Pull it off right and you’ll look like a member of the Smiths circa 1985, in a handsome and charming way.
This may come as a shock to the style council, but I never purchase casual jackets with the expectation that I should be able to button them. Only buy a jacket that looks fly unbuttoned. Even if you’re in great shape, no one wants to see you in a buttoned denim jacket.
This next bit is the most important. Like a blazer or suit jacket, it's all about the fit of the shoulders. You can always make a small investment and get the sleeves shortened or the sides taken in, but not even a miracle worker can fix a bum shoulder.
Aside from that, do you! Worn-in/lighter colored jackets look killer with v-neck sweaters for a clean-but-mean mod look, not unlike the cover of John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton. Other recommended pairings include a darker denim jacket with a black t-shirt (not too tight) or a brightly colored gingham check shirt.
Oh, this should go without saying, but don't get anything with mismatched buttons, extra-wide collars, or any other arty embellishments. It's a denim jacket. You are a dude. Just wear it.
Get weird but stay fit!
