Self Styled with Elliot Aronow: All About the Tie

While I don't wear ties with suits (too formal for my vibe), I have found that they look really fantastic with a blazer, dark jeans and a vaguely pressed button-down collar shirt, making them perfect for spring/summer "liberal office" attire. And in the event your job does not afford you the luxury of wearing whatever you want to work, a colorful patterned tie during this time of year can add a much-welcomed pop of color and optimism to your average office-slave uniform. So, yeah, you should go buy a nice tie for the summer.

Now, all of those trendy fashion magazines are going to tell you to look for a tie that is around 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches wide, and while they are not incorrect (this is the style of the moment) I think it's best to avoid hard-and-fast rules and think more about what you are pairing the piece with. You should also think (realistically) about your frame. If you are a juicier man, avoid super-slim ties. They will only make you look wider since they cover less surface area. Conversely, if you are a slim cat, you probably don't want to be rocking anything wider than 3 1/4 inches, as it will look like a carpet vomited on your chest. You don't want that.

The general rule is this: pick out a blazer and look at its lapels. If they are wider, choose a wider tie. If they are slimmer (under 2 3/4 inches) get something slimmer. Real genius-level shiz, huh? Once that is set, freak a pattern. If you like to dress like a rich man who goes on vacation a lot, you could get a Madras tie from the venerable preppy retailer J. Press. And if you wanna be a big boy, you can invest in this gorgeous "creamsicle and coral" Miami Dolphins-inspired striped tie from Kiton, a company that runs the streets when it comes to bold, high-end ties. Think pink, sky blue, yellow, orange. All of those colors will work great paired with a white shirt and a blue jacket.  Respect ya neck!
