Our stylist breaks down everything you need to know about chinos.
If you are young, a rebel, in incredible shape and in possession of rare long-legged genes then you should a rock a pair of beautifully tailored shorts that hit just a few inches above your knees. For everyone else, you need to get yourself some summer-ready pants of the non-jean variety. Something that breathes, steers clear of middle management Chili's Triple Dipper territory and creates the illusion that you are a nice person to be around.
The post-WASPy colored khakis that all them bro fashion mavens been urging you to wear are cool and all, but to me they communicate that you are trying too hard. In two years they will be out of style and you will be left holding the bag, wondering why you ever thought looking like a fire-engine nosebleed was a good idea.
Instead, I'd dial it back a few notches. Anything two doors down from plain-ass khaki (like the honey brown joints listed here, or anything in light cream/eggshell) will give you that extra pop of swagger and uniqueness that summer demands. Something like these Uniqlo Vintage Chino Flat Front Pants in color 36 Brown. The coin pocket in the front is a good look as well. I recommend throwing your keys in there to create a nice even line. Less stuff in your side and back pockets makes for a cleaner fit.
Or, if you are bit more advanced, these beautiful Village Slim twill chinos from Baron Wells could do the trick. You will note that both of the pants featured here have a trim, non-Office Space fit. They may seem borderline snoozy at first, but if you wear them unpressed and rock them with a less-than-perfect cuff, you can throw in pops of color, like loud shoes or a flavorful madras-style shirt.
Now that we have covered the vibes, a few non-negotiables: Never ever wear any pants with pleats. Never ever wear pants that are too long and bunch up at the bottom. And don't wear black shoes with khakis. Peace!
