As fall sets in, one of the items I’m happy to see making an appearance on more mainstream racks is the cotton parka, a more fall-appropriate cousin of the heavy-duty winterized "snorkel" variant. It's basically a military-style jacket with a hood and big pockets — super utilitarian.
Parkas were popularized as menswear by Mods during the ’60s.The idea behind the look was that you needed something durable and functional to help protect your suits from the elements when you were cruising around town. In keeping with this spirit, you should think of it as a casual coat that you needn't be too fussy about. It also goes great with dark blue jeans and a classic button-down shirt.
When trying it on, be sure you have a good amount of room in the chest and sleeves: you want enough space so you can rock a sweater or tweed blazer underneath once the temperature dips. Layers are your friends.
For a street-level take on the style, this collab between NYC retail kings Odin and Target is really well done for the price and can work with sneakers, a crew neck sweatshirt or whatever else you have lying around. Think Joy Division skater with some polish.
On the more upscale tip, look for something with clean, strong lines, like this olive joint from Swedish cool guys Our Legacy. It comes with a detachable wool lining and has just the right amount of rugged semi-baggy attitude.
