Self-Styled with Elliot: Summer Holidays versus Club Routine

Self-Styled teaches you the finer points of club wear in this summer.

If you are living the right kind of life, chances are you will need to have at least one sharp-yet-casual outfit to wear to nocturnal summer events, like a dinner party or a disco party with bearded DJs and cute ladies at a hip club.

While there are many ways in which you can screw this look up (black blazer paired with graphic tees, high-tops or dad jeans), the good news is that you only really need to sweat two pieces to own it: a really nice jacket and top-notch pair of shoes.

Let's start with the jacket. I tell dudes to avoid wearing black and gray in the summer. Those looks can be a little too serious for the season, especially if you are going to a club and don't want to look like Zoolander. Instead, pick something in the navy blue family.

You can build your entire outfit around the jacket, so don't be afraid to buy the most expensive jacket you can afford and then really trick it out at your local tailor shop. You could, for example, get something like this classic navy blue blazer from Gant and swap out the gold buttons, which are very preppy, for more multi-purpose buffalo horn or shell ones.

As for your dogs, I'd go with something like this extremely handsome brown oxford from Allen Edmonds. It's super sharp but not "club gear." Grown dudes don't have club gear; they have nice items they wear out at night. You want to look like you came from someplace way fancier and cooler and then decided to drop by for a dance, not like some loser trying to slide the doorman a Hamilton to get in.

To tie it all together, wear a pair of slim but not tight blue jeans (khakis are not advised for nighttime looks) and an oxford shirt (button-down collar a must) and you’re good to go. Maybe throw in a bold tie like this Ashland and knit joint from NYC's Epaulet and start picking up some extra phone numbers.
