A MAP OF AMERICA'S WEIRDEST SEX LAWS

You can’t own more than six dildos in Texas. In California you can’t sell booby pillows within 1,000 feet of a highway. These, and other bizarre sex laws from around the U.S., are laid out on a map of the nation so you can check if your favorite state has a strange statute on the books pertaining to sex. Scan the map and find out if you’re breaking any laws in your region at io9.com.

THAT'S... HOW MANY VIRGIN BIRTHS A YEAR?

The most famous virgin birth is the one being celebrated next week, but what if we told you that one in 200 births in the U.S. are virgin births? If this were true there would be a lot of messiahs making wine out of water! It would be more accurate to report that “one in 200 U.S. women claim to have given birth without ever having had sexual intercourse.” The word “claim” is obviously the key element of that quote.

The statistic comes from a new study in the British Medical Journal examining reproductive health. It’s probably relevant to mention that many of the women who claimed to have been with child without having first known a man Biblically also reported that they had little in the way of sex ed from either their parents or their schools. As well, a large percentage of virgin birth claimants had signed chastity pledges committing themselves to abstinence until marriage. It all sounds mighty suspicious! 812 BETTER CONDOM DESIGNS

Many men don't enjoy using them, but condoms save lives, lower the risk of disease and help to prevent unintended pregnancies. If there was a better rubber, a condom that was still cheap and easy to use and kept the levels of sensation and pleasure up...wouldn’t everyone the world over use it?

That’s the idea behind the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s contest to build a better condom. They offered a $100,000 prize for a superior condom design and now 11 out of 812 winners have been selected. Among the winners are a “wrapping condom” that clings on easily like plastic wrap and a nanoparticle-powered prophylactic that changes its shape to fit “like an extra layer of skin.” Read more about the contest, and some of the other winning selections, at NYTimes.com.
