Sex Sells: Surfing

The surf world was in an uproar this week (well, as big an uproar as the laid-back, stoned surf world can muster) over the release of Roxy’s latest trailer, an “official teaser” for the Roxy Pro Biarritz, a World Tour surfing event, that in the words of one writer from Surfer Magazine “might just decide the 2013 World Champion.”

That same writer took exception to the video (which you can see below):

I wasn’t surprised by Roxy’s attempt to market their upcoming competition in Biarritz with this video; I was, however, bewildered by it. This is a trailer for a surf contest. And not just any surf contest, a World Tour event…it’s the vessel for sharing with the world what women’s competitive surfing is all about. And yet not a single wave is ridden.”

It seems her male counterparts were equally confused by Roxy’s attempt to promote the event and so the question was asked: “Whom is this intended to appeal to? Young girls with aspirations for topless greatness? Those in search of a new source for partial nudity? (The Internet doesn’t have enough of that.) This appears to be aimed at the lowest-common-denominator, a last-ditch effort to get consumers interested in something that the producers don’t believe can stand on its own merit.”

Seems that Roxy has adopted the sex sells strategy to try and pitch the women’s surfing circuit to a mass audience, and maybe it will work (we’re watching it here next weekend), but Surfer should hardly be surprised; Roxy has been doing this for a long, long time:
