Playboy Retro: Playmates in Space!

Did you know that in 1969 four Playboy Playmates went to the moon!? Well...sort of. During America’s second lunar mission (Apollo 12), pictures of centerfolds were smuggled aboard as a prank. The backup crew had a friendly rivalry with the Apollo 12 astronauts and as a gag placed images of Playboy Playmates into two of the astronauts’ (Charles "Pete" Conrad and Alan Bean) cuff checklists—special plastic booklets attached to the astronauts’ space suits with instructions for what data to gather while out on the surface of the moon.

Mission commander Charles Conrad reminisced to Playboy about the stunt in 1994: "I had no idea they were with us. It wasn't until we actually got out on the lunar surface and were well into our first moonwalk that I found them." Four different girls were put into the two checklists; Conrad got Reagan Wilson and Angela Dorian, while Bean received Cynthia Myers and Leslie Bianchini. Let’s take a look at the Playmates who were truly out of this world.

“Preferred tether partner” read the notes that accompanied the picture of Reagan Wilson, Miss October 1967. This very buxom (40D!) blonde-haired, green-eyed wonder lit up the dark lunar landscape with her sunny vibes. A Montana girl with a taste for horseback riding and the outdoors, Reagan moved to California to pursue an acting and modeling career. She always knew she’d go far but never guessed she’d be tagging along with the third man to ever walk on the moon!

Shots from actress Angela Dorian’s Playmate of the Year pictorial were recently featured in our Playboy Retro feature Sexy Screen Sirens, but it’s her stellar September 1967 Playmate pics that travelled 238,857 miles through space. From the screen to the page to outer space, Angela is a girl well worth mooning over!

“Don’t forget—Describe the protuberances” were the notes Alan Bean got with his photo of Miss December 1968, Cynthia Myers. Her Playmate biography makes her sound like a spacey girl by describing her love of astrology, tarot cards and psychic phenomena, but her earthy brunette good looks and her 39DD-24-36 measurements make her one magical woman. Check her out; as one lucky astronaut found out, her protuberances are indescribable and just have to be seen to be believed.

Leslie Bianchini went from the daughter of an Illinois turkey farmer to a Playboy Bunny in San Francisco to Miss January 1969 and then all the way to the stars. What a wild ride for a wildly delectable girl. “Survey—her activity” instructed the NASA checklist. We may not be heading to the moon anytime soon, but this is a mission we can all easily follow through on.
