From one repo man to another: you arrive at a job to find that the offender is actually living in the vehicle. Moral quandary! What do you do?—Jim, Jonestown, Indiana

I’ve had that happen a couple of times, and that’s one of the worst situations I’ve ever run into. It may be my job to take somebody’s vehicle, but when you have to take what is essentially somebody’s home—that’s a lot different. In those instances, I’ve rented a hotel room for four or five nights to make sure the family living in the car were off their feet and had a place to stay. I always try to check up on them. As repossessors we’ve got a job to do, but anyone can have hard luck. You may have to take their car, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take the time out to talk to them, maybe even develop a friendship and help those people in other ways.
