Sometimes going against the grain is what will get you noticed in the fashion world and former Oasis front man Liam Gallagher has made a life doing just that.
“Not a lot of people are cool these days – like my cool. Everybody plays it down, don’t they?”
There is little doubt that fashion tends towards trends: designers and brands are constantly working within a framework of seasonal styles and ideas, colors and patterns, toward an ultimately similar end with only minor deviations. But every so often, truly awesome and elaborate style comes from going against the grain, from bucking the trends and, in the words of the great Fleetwood Mac, going your own way.
Which is what former Oasis front man Liam Gallagher has spent the better part of his adult life doing. The quote above is easily attributed to someone whose own brother once called him “the angriest man you’ll ever meet…a man with a fork in a world of soup.” But he also called him “Lennon reincarnated,” and we’ll agree.
While Gallagher’s look is certainly inventive and perhaps out of place in today's mainstream market, it’s hardly original; it harkens back to the Carnaby Street style of the late '60s, with a little military influence and more than a little of the mod revival that overtook the '80s. It’s hardly fashion forward and yet it plays into this year’s fascination with straight lines and simple cuts. Simply put, it’s the best of both worlds; so firmly grounded in the Gallagher counterculture, derisive of whatever it might mean to be "cool" yet subtly current enough so as to not throw the wearer completely to the denizen dogs of design.
And the good news is that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it all out; in its simplicity, Gallagher has created a style that is relatively simple to steal.
For instance, his shirts are of the plain variety: a solid white or black tee or polo will do. His denim is a dark, straight cut and his shoes are often standard, following suit with the dark, simple design.
It’s in the jackets and overshirts where the Liam we all know and (sometimes) love shines through. Take for example this Nudie organic denim jacket (bottom left), to be worn in true Gallagher fashion buttoned to the top. Or this burgundy mac coat from ASOS (bottom, middle), worn open with a dead black tee. Finally, perhaps the piece de resistance, this Superdry Core Military jacket (bottom, right) would be worn to all occaisions regardless of dress code or any other irredeemable social faux pas that might come attached with it. That’s just the way Liam Gallagher would do it.
Other options for Gallagher-esque jackets include this gray duffle coat from ASOS, this Diesel Jathen Teflon trench coat and this All Saints Compton coat.
