Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Barbados, R&B super star Rihanna had a troubled childhood with an abusive father who was battling drug addiction. Rihanna threw herself into singing and was discovered by producer Evan Rogers while auditioning for the vacationing producer as part of a girl group. ”The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist,” Rogers told Entertainment Weekly. ”She carried herself like a star even when she was 15. But the killer was when she opened her mouth to sing. She was a little rough around the edges, but she had this edge to her voice.”
By 16 Rihanna left Barbados to live with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut and work on her music career. “When I left Barbados, I didn’t look back,” Rihanna, told Entertainment Weekly. ”I wanted to do what I had to do [to succeed], even if it meant moving to America.”
And succeed she did. In 2005 she auditioned for Jay-Z and was signed with Def Jam Records. Later that same year she released her debut album, “Music of the Sun.” A commercial and critical success, Rolling Stone called it “a seductive mix of big-voiced R&B and souped-up island riddims.” Her second album, “A Girl Like Me,” was released the following year with hit singles “Unfaithful” and “SOS.”
In 2007 Rihanna turned up her sexy image with the release of her edgier third album, “Good Girl Gone Bad.” The album included “Umbrella,” “Don’t Stop the Music,” and “Shut Up and Drive.” The hit albums and songs, one more provocative than the next, kept coming, including "Disturbia,” “Take a Bow,” “Hard,” “Rude Boy,” and “S&M.”
Rihanna is just as frank in interviews. “I like to take charge, but I love to be submissive,” she told Rolling Stone. “Being submissive in the bedroom is really fun. You get to be a little lady, to have somebody be macho and in charge of your shit. That’s sexy to me. I work a lot, and I have to make a lot of executive decisions, so when it comes to being intimate, I like to feel like I’m somebody’s girl.” Romantically, Rihanna has had a turbulent and public on and off relationship with singer Chris Brown.
In addition to her musical success, Rihanna has graced covers of Elle and Cosmopolitan, was named Esquire magazine’s sexiest woman alive, has done advertising for Nike, Gucci, CoverGirl, and Clinique, and has her own perfume, Reb'l Fleur.
